Sustainable cities

Throughout the world, cities are showing signs of neglect. Local authorities face an array of problems: poorly functioning infrastructure, crime, the threat of terrorism, poverty, pollution, inadequate housing and an increasing gap between the formal and the informal city; a gap that restricts access of billions of people worldwide to education, public transport, health care, information and the formal economy.

In 2050 75% of the world population is predicted to live in cities. The large cities are the engines of the world economy. The cities therefore are the key to the future and in the 21st century, they will be more important than countries. To what extent is Rotterdam future proof in providing the conditions for a better life?
